UK ISPs to Block Internet Porn by Default

52 sec read

By the end of 2013 all Internet connections in the UK will have porn filters added unless the owner of the connection decides to opt out of the program. Such were the words of David Cameron.

In an attempt to protect children from being exposed to online porn, the UK government has decided to start censoring the Internet in much the same way as dictatorships around the world.

The filter is added by default on all Internet connections unless the owner specifically states that he or she would like access to pornography. This raises a serious privacy issue in my book.

I’m sure the intention of David Cameron and the rest of the UK politicians is a very noble one, but in their rush to safe the children from exposure to adult material they at the same time slaughter basic rights of UK citizens.

“Mr Cameron also called for some “horrific” internet search terms to be “blacklisted”, meaning they would automatically bring up no results on websites such as Google or Bing.”

There are some obvious searches for illegal material that should be prevented, but how are these terms determined? I can clearly see an issue arising when they start banning terms based on moral definitions and not legal.

Thankfully – a VPN connection will most likely be able to bypass these restrictions by encryption data transfer to and from the users computer. This will leave the ISP unable to block content.
