Sky GO’s slogan is “Watch TV you love on the move”. Well just as long as you remain inside the UK that is, as the service won’t work outside the UK. However, by using the following little trick you will be able to watch Sky GO no matter where you go.
Due to licensing agreements with the copyright holders Sky can’t stream to users outside the UK. In order to check where in theworld the user is located when using the service, the website will do revers trace on your computers IP address to see in which country you are located. An IP address is a unique number that your computer will inherit via the Internet provider you are using at the time. This practice is very common and is called geo blocking. Fortunately it is very easy to work around.
Since Sky will use your IP address to determine your location all you need to do is obtain a UK IP address. In order to do so you need to connect to what is known as a Virtual Private Network or VPN. Once connected to this type of network you will inherit an IP address from the server in the other end, and if this server is located in the UK then the IP you inherit will be as well. It might sound a bit tricky, but as a matter of fact it is very easy to setup.
All you need is an account with a VPN provider. I suggest taking a look at UK based Unlocator as their service is perfect for this trick. Simply sign up for an account and install their software, which supports both PC and Mac. Once installed select a server located in the UK from the list and click connect. From that moment on you will appear to be located in the UK and you can now watch Sky GO no matter where in the world you are located. Pretty sweet right?
You can use your Unlocator account with your mobile device as well. Simply follow the guides found in the members area and select the device you own. Sky GO while on vacation on your iPad – that’s priceless. Anyhow I hope you can use the trick.
