Film4 on Demand is a service only available in the UK. This means that if you travel abroad you are unable to use the service – however you can bypass these restrictions by using a fairly simple trick.
It is a bit of a downer travelling abroad on vacation or business only to find out you can’t access Film4 on Demand any longer. When you visit the site you are meet with the message:” Sorry, you must live in the United Kingdom to use this site.” Basically Film4 has been able to detect your location via your computers IP-address. An IP-address is needed to connect to the Internet and it is a one off number that you inherit from the Internet provider you are using at the time you connect to the Internet. So if you are abroad you will be inheriting a IP-address from a foreign provider. This makes it easy for Film4 to detect your location and block you from accessing the site.
So what you need to do is obtain an IP-address from the UK. This is fairly simple and it will allow you to not only access Film4 but also other UK only sites.
Gain Access to UK Only Sites via VPN
The key here is connecting to a so-called Virtual Private Network (VPN). When you connect to a VPN you will log on to a server often located in another country. In this case the UK. Once connected you will inherit an IP-address from this server instead of the IP you have from your Internet Provider. This allows you to bypass country restrictions like the one put in place by Film4.
Connecting to a VPN is fairly and all you have to make sure is that you use a VPN provider with a fast network. Personally I prefer using Unlocator as their speeds and prices are the best available. Their application will allow you to connect to servers is the UK as well as 43 other locations around the world. That way you can unblock many other websites and services as well from all over the world. I like to call the HMA application my unblocking toolbox.
Choose a server in London, Berkshire or Manchester and then click connect. After a couple of seconds you will be connected and you can then reload the Film4 website and you will be presented with the front page like you are used to.
