If you live in China you are no stranger to blocked websites abroad – especially American and Western websites. Even as a traveller you will quickly find out that you cannot access the same sites, as you are used to outside of China. In order to get around this we need to use a VPN connection.

How does it work?

There are two options for the blockage. Either the American site does not allow users from outside the US to access their service (, Hulu and so on) or the Chinese ISP has blocked access to the site. Both scenarios can be fixed by using the same approach.

The cure is called VPN. VPN stands for virtual private network and will allow you to connect to a server in the US that will act as a middleman. This will make it impossible for the Chinese ISP to block access to the site you want to see, and at the same time, US only websites will think you are located in the US and allow you access to their service.

How to get a good VPN connection

There are quite a few options on the market these days, but after having burned my fingers on quite a few there is only one I can recommend and that is Unlocator. They have been doing VPN connections since 2005, so it is fair to say they know what they are doing. I suggest getting the 6 or 12 months package, as it is perfect for your needs.

The setup is very simple and once you have registered you will receive an email with setup instructions that are a super simple to follow. If for some reason you should get stuck they have 24/7 live support to get you set up. So break free and enjoy the Internet as it was designed to be.
