Apart from being and awesome gaming machine the Wii can stream Netflix movies too. That is if you are inside the US, but I have a little trick for you that will enable your Wii to stream Netflix movies as if you are located in the US.
Whenever you connect your Wii, computer, phone or whatever device the Internet it will use an IP address to communicate. By looking at this IP address Netflix can determine where in the world you are located and thus block you if you are outside the US.
Actually there is not much of a trick to it. What you have to do is to connect to a VPN server. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and what is does is connect your device to a server located in the US that will act as a middleman between you and Netflix. Thus fooling them into thinking you are in the US too. This works from anywhere in the world – Europe, Asia, South America you name it. I recommend using Hide My Ass VPN for this purpose.
Simply change your country to the UK in order to get access to the Netflix app. Install the app and you are ready for the next step.
Well actually you can’t connect a Wii directly to VPN. The problem is that the Wii has no VPN client – why would it need one? The trick is sharing a VPN connection from a device that is already connected to a VPN. There are 3 options you can use:
So in order to make Netflix think you are located in the US you first need to sign up with Netflix. Use a fake US address and make sure you use the same zip code when you sign up as you do when you enter your credit card info with them.
Next step is to order a VPN connection with Hide My Ass. I suggest getting the 6 or 12 months package as they have the best discounts.
So that is how you stream Netflix to your Wii outside the US. As a side note this will enable all Netflix ready devices in your household to connect to Netflix as long as they log onto the same VPN connection. This could be any computer, iPhone, iPad and so forth. It really is money well spend.
