When surfing the Internet we leave all sorts of traces – even without being aware of it. Today I’m going to talk a little about what you can do in order to surf undetected.
There are several things that will reveal personal information online. First of all there is no reason to become paranoid but if you for some reason want to surf undetected here is a range of tips that will enable you to reduce your fingerprints.
All computers need an IP-address to go online. You IP-address is assigned automatically to you from your Internet Provider and it is a unique number that you need in order to connect to the Internet at all. The IP-address can be traced back to your Internet Provider and location and as such it is a tell tell sign of your location. By connecting to a VPN such as Unlocator you can remain anonymous to the websites you visit and you can select to appear in a completely different country if you like. A must have if you are serious about online privacy.
Cookies are used by websites to keep track of visitors. A cookie is a small file placed on the users machine when he visits a website. Most often it is used to save personal preferences and the like, but in other instances it is used to track the user across the web. By disabling cookies in your browser you are one step closer protecting your privacy. However, you must be aware that many some features on websites will sometimes not work properly. Lets say you are asked to sign up for a newsletter or something like that – if you click the close button this choice will not be remember and you will be asked again on the next visit. Minor announce – but not a deal breaker.
A great alternative to Google is the Duck Duck Go search machine. All searches are anonymous and the referrer headers are not sent along to the websites you visit. Google still sends along this info for users who are not logged into Google, and if you log in then your searches are no longer anonymous are they?
I don’t think that users are aware of the amount of personal info they give you without their consent purely via their behavior online. If you are doing illegal activities nothing can really help you remain undetected – just as it should be, but for people concerned about their privacy the above are great tips for actively reducing the private fingerprint they leave behind when surfing.
