Recently a survey has showed that 70 percent of college students were unaware that their school can monitor their online activities. The IT departments rarely use this power, but to be on the safe side I will show you how to hide your online activity.

When you connect to the Internet via a network provided by your college the IT department could decide to track your online habits. I think most people can agree that they would prefer to have their private business remain private.

Use VPN and Blindfold the IT Department

The solution is connecting to the Internet via a VPN connection. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and will disable anyone from monitoring your surfing habits. When you connect to a VPN server your data connection becomes encrypted. This will not only allow you to connect to websites normally blocked by the college firewall, but also keep away prying eyes from your online activity.

If the IT department were to take a look at the data flowing from your computer they would only be able to pick up that bandwidth is used, but that is basically it.

VPN is normally used in a workplace environment when workers need to connect securely to the workplace infrastructure.

Setting up VPN is pretty straightforward. I recommend using Unlocator, which has great speeds and tons of different servers you can connect to. Simply install their application and now you can select a server from the long list and click connect. From that moment on your computer will establish an encrypted connection to the server in the other end, which will act as a middleman between you and the Internet.

Surf undercover at college
This is a must have tool if you are using torrents and want to hide your real location. You can also setup VPN on your smartphone or iPad, which is a real good idea if you regularly connect to public Wi-Fi networks as these are favorite locations for hackers sniffing data.
