One of the most popular ways to watch Netflix is on the PS3. If you live outside the US you need to use a couple of Ninja tricks to get access to Netflix. In this tutorial I will show you how.
The tutorial is divided into separate steps and you may jump ahead if you have already completed a step before starting the tutorial.
First of all you need to be a member of Netflix and if you haven’t already got an account you need to set one up. The problem is that Netflix is able to detect that you are located outside the US. That is why you are presented with the message: “Sorry, Netflix is not available in your country” when you visit the Netflix website. To get around this problem you need to connect to a so-called Virtual Private Network (VPN) with a server in the US. That way you will be able to fake your location and Netflix will allow you to sign up. We also need to use this VPN connection later on for the streaming of Netflix.
I prefer using Hide My Ass VPN as they have great prices and speed. Once you have created an account with them simply install the VPN application on your PC or Mac and connect to a server in the US from the drop down menu in the app. Once connected reload the Netflix website and you are now able to sign up for an account. When you have to input your zip code then use a 5-digit US zip code. I used 90210 and it works just fine. So far so good and you could stop here if you wanted and simply stream Netflix from your computer. If you want to take it a step further and watch on the PS3 as well then read on.
In order to get access to the Netflix application at all you need to get a US PlayStation account. This is done by signing up for a new PlayStation account from the US PlayStation site. Remember to select location as the United States and fill in US info under the address and billing info. Simply make up an address and set state to California and zip code to 90210. Complete all the steps and you now have a new US PlayStation account.
Now we come to the most crucial step. The problem is that in order to use the Netflix application on the PS3 from outside the US you need to fake your location via VPN. The problem is that the PS3 does not have a build in VPN client or the ability to install VPN software. The trick is sharing a VPN connection from a device that is already connected to a VPN. There are 3 options you can use:
Once you have hidden the location of your PS3 via VPN move on to the last step.
Create a new user on the PS3 and sign in with your new US PlayStation account. Go to the TV/Video Services in the menu and look for Netflix under my channels. Install the application and then go on to log in with your new Netflix account.
Most of the steps are pretty straightforward and basically you have to remember to stay connected with VPN when creating the Netflix account, and using the Netflix app on the PS3.
I have seen the most stable connection with the DD-WRT router when connecting with L2TP from the router. Once you have signed up for Hide My Ass just click on chat support at the bottom and ask them to send you the L2TP guide and they will forward you the setup instructions.
Anyhow that is all there is to it if you want to watch Netflix on your PS3 from Outside the US. Although it might seem like a lot of steps it actually doesn’t take that long to setup and it is well worth it in the end as you will get months worth of entertainment out of this setup. Happy viewing.
