Guide Highlights
- In order to unblock a US only service you need to use a VPN Connection such as Hide My Ass
- Lastly you need to sign up for Netflix. Simply connect to the VPN server in the US and then use a 5 digit zip code once you need to enter your credit card info.
Netflix has launched the Mexican version but as usual the content is lacking compared to the US version of Netflix. Luckily there is a simple trick that will give you access to the full US version even when located in Mexico.
How do I Trick Netflix Into Thinking I am in the US?
The thing is, that Netflix will check your IP-address and discover you are in Mexico and as you know, if you live outside the US you will be blocked from streaming the US version. But there is an easy way to get an IP located in gringo land. The answer is connecting to a Virtual Private Network also know as VPN (I use Hide My Ass VPN for this, but more about them later). By connecting to such a server you will get a middleman in the US and Netflix will thus think you are located in the US and open up for streaming. It is really that dead simple.
Finding a VPN for the Job
Since video streaming is a very bandwidth intensive activity it will require an above average VPN connection. When I started out testing this trick on my own I tried out a range
of VPN providers and even though they were able to allow me to sign up for Netflix, the streaming part didn’t work so well. They simply weren’t fast enough. As a result I set out to do some more research and came across Hide My Ass VPN, which has a very different approach to setting up VPN.
Instead of just giving you a server address, user name and password they have created a native app for both Mac and PC that will do the setup for you. This simplifies the process as all you have to do is select where in the US you want to hide and then click connect. On top of that the app has a build in test tool that will automatically find the server in the US with the best speeds according to your location in Mexico. Instead of manually testing each of the many servers in the US the optimization was performed automatically. Needles to say this was the lifesaver that gave me the results I were after.
Of course manual settings are available for the iPad, iPhone and Android devices as well so you wont be left out in the cold if you want to use the US version on the go.
Lastly you need to remember to remain connected with the VPN when streaming or it will not work. Anyhow that is all there is to if you want to use the US version of Netflix from Mexico. Happy streaming.
