Unfortunately Netflix is not yet available in Hong Kong and even if it might be some day, then the content will never be able to match that of the US version. However, it is actually very straightforward to unblock the US version of Netflix in Hong Kong.
Like so many other online services Netflix will determine your location simply by taking a look at your IP address when you try to sign up or connect to the service. Your IP address is a unique number inherited from your Internet provider and it is a dead give away that you are located in Hong Kong.
So what you need to do it obtain an American IP address to trick Netflix into letting you both sign up and stream.
It is actually much easier to get an American IP address than it sounds. By using a Virtual Private Network, or VPN, you can connect to a server in the US that will act as a middleman between you and Netflix. This will leave Netflix in the blind unable to locate you in Hong Kong and instead it will appear as if you are in the US at the location of the VPN server.
It is important to understand that video streaming is one of the most demanding online activities you can put a VPN connection trough. As a result only a few providers are suited for this type of workaround. When I first started out I tried all sorts of different providers with pretty bad results to follow. In the end however I came across Hide My Ass VPN that has a very different approach to setting up a VPN connection. Instead of a manual setup all you have to do is install their small app for either Mac or PC and select where in the US you want to hide. The app will take care of the rest and will even allow you to test what server in the US will give you the best speeds from your location in Hong Kong. For me this was an invaluable tool and it proved to make a great difference.
So all you have to do is connect with the app to a server in the US. Once connected head on over to Netflix and sign up for the free trial and after that just remember to stay connected to the VPN whenever using Netflix.
That is all there is to it. You can also use the Hide My Ass connection on your iPad or iPhone with the manual settings that come with an account. Anyhow – if you are looking for a way to unblock Netflix in Hong Kong then this is it.
