If you are travelling abroad the US or simply live outside the US you will soon learn that in order to watch Netflix you need to be a little sneaky. That is because Netflix is a US only service and the website will check your location by checking your IP-address, which will give away your location. So to trick Netflix into thinking you are inside the USA you need to a use a neat little trick
Since many of you readers prefer to get straight to the point I will do a quick 5-step guide. The service I’m using to unblock Netflix is called Unlocator.
The cool thing about this method is that your network speed remains the same. As the service is essentially just a couple of network settings you can use it with just about any device that supports Netflix.
The Netflix servers determine your location based on the origin of the network requests coming from you. The Unlocator services steps in between you and Netflix and hides the actual location of the request and as a result Netflix will think you are located in the US.
Actually the Unlocator service allows you to switch between all the different Netflix regions. This means that you can use the same Netflix account to watch US Netflix as well as Canadian or UK Netflix.
First log out of Netflix on the device you are using to watch. Then simply login to the account home at Unlocator and change Netflix region under “channel settings”. After that restart the device you are using and login to Netflix again. Now all the content from Netflix will originate from the selected region.
Besides simply changing the network settings on the device you want to watch Netflix on, a more popular method is changing your home routers settings to use the Unlocator DNS. That way any device connected to your router will become unblocked and use the service. Personally I prefer this method as I have quite a lot of devices connected to our home WiFi including a Smart TV, iPad, Computer, Phone and PlayStation. By changing our router to use the Unlocator DNS all the devices have become unblocked at the same time.
You can find setup guides for your router at the setup page here.
You don’t need an American credit card when signing up for Netflix – just make sure that you use a 5 digit zip code (90210 comes to mind) and you can use any valid card you like.
For the record the Unlocator service can be used for more than watching Netflix USA. You can also use it to unblock Hulu and other American Websites. Netflix is just the top of the iceberg. That’s it – so if you travel outside the USA or go abroad this is the way to go. You can check out Unlocator here.
As mentioned above the Unlocator service is simply a DNS server, and in order to use it you need to change the network settings for your device. You can find a complete list of setup guides here.
The service is available for a long list of devices and for the time being it includes browsers, Smart TVs, Apple TV, iPad, iPhone, iPod, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Roku, Western Digital, Android and much more.
The Netflix USA library is the largest of any Video on Demand provider giving you access to more than 13.000 different movies and TV shows. Netflix has signed a new deal with Twentieth Century Fox making Prison Break, 24, The X-Files, Arrested Development, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Wall Street, Office Space and lots more available for Netflix streaming and Netflix USA has revived the fantastic show Arrested Development that is exclusive to Netflix.
If, for some reason, you are not content with the US Netflix selection then don’t forget that you can switch to any version of Netflix you like with Unlocator. Effectively giving you access to all content available across the Netflix network.
Anyhow if you are as big a Netflix fan as I am then I suggest checking out the service and setup a free account and test it out.
