If you want to watch Netflix in Switzerland you have to jump trough a few hoops. That is because Netflix is only available in the US, Canada and Latin America. Perhaps Netflix will some day come to Switzerland, but the content will never be the same as in the US version. Just ask the Canadians and Latin Americans who are stuck with subpar content. However, it is easy to get your hands on a US Netflix account and I will show you how.
Actually the trick is pretty straightforward. Netflix will determine your location by taking a look at your IP address when you sign up or try using the service from an existing account. As you can imagine Netflix will see that you are located in Switzerland in no time and show you the door.
In order to get around that you have to connect to a Virtual Private Network. This will allow you to connect to a server in the US that will act as a middleman between you and Netflix. That way you will both be able to sign up for and use Netflix from Switzerland.
See when I first started using this trick I ran out and signed up at some random VPN provider and sure enough I was able to sign up, but when it came to streaming it was nothing but pixelated pixels. Turns out that most VPN providers are not build for this type of heavy bandwidth usage. After burning my fingers a couple of times I finally came across Hide My Ass VPN and I had finally the perfect match for this hack.
HMA has a different approach to VPN as they have built a native app for both Mac and PC that make setting up a solid VPN a breeze. Just install the app, select a server in the US and click connect. If you like you can also use the build in test to find the server in the US with the fastest speed from your location in Switzerland. All in all it was a lifesaver for me.
So that is basically all there is to it, and if you want to enjoy Netflix from Switzerland then this is the way to go. Just remember to be connected with Hide My Ass when you sign up for Netflix or the process will fail.
