Bollywood might have a great selection of movies, but sometimes you are in the mood for another selection of movies. The best online service is by far Netflix, but it is a US only service blocked in India unless you use the following trick.
See like so many other online services Netflix will take a look at the visitors IP-address in order to determine where in the world you are located. For those who don’t know an IP-address is a unique number inherited from your Internet provider that all devices need in order to get online. Unfortunately this IP-address will be a dead give away of your location in India and you will be blocked from watching Netflix and even signing up to the service.
Well it turns out it is pretty simple – to the rescue comes our old friend VPN which stands for Virtual Private Network. What this does is connect you to a local server in the United States, and then this server will act as a middleman between you and Netflix. In other words Netflix will not know you are in India and thus allow you to stream.
So by now I can imagine you would like to know how to set this up right? Well it is actually very simple. When first looking into unblocking
Netflix I tested out a couple of different VPN providers with mixed results. The problem is that in order to stream video in good quality and watch Netflix, then the VPN provider needs to have plenty of bandwidth. I ended up with Hide My Ass VPN, and even though they admittedly have a weird name the service works really well.
The 6 and 12 months packages have great discounts, but of course you can just test it out with the 1-month package. The setup is super easy as all you have to do is install a small application that will allow you to select where in the world you want to connect to. To unblock Netflix simply choose an American server and connect. Then head on over to Netflix and sign up for the 1-month free trial and you are ready to stream.
So if you are located in Mumba, Delhi, Banglore, Kolkata, Chennai or any other place in India for that matter, then this is the way to go if you want to watch US Netflix in India.
