Netflix is by far the most popular streaming service in the world. More than 26 million people subscribe to Netflix worldwide. The problem is that Netflix is only available in North and South America, The UK and Scandinavia. As a result, Germans are not able to use Netflix in Germany. However, there is a smart online service that changes all that.
The service I use for this trick is called Unlocator. If you are the impatient type you can simply use the following quick guide to unblock Netflix in Germany.
That is really all there is to it. If you would like to know more about how Unlocator works, then read on.
Whenever your computer or device tries to communicate with Netflix, your location is revealed via your data traffic. Unlocator is a DNS service with a twist, that will make your data traffic appear to come from the US when you communicate with Netflix. That way, Netflix will be think you are located in the US and you may use the service.
The cool thing about this method is that your Internet speed remains the same and you will see no speed loss.
Once you have set up Unlocator on your router or computer, then you will need to create a Netflix account. Simply go to Netflix.com and start the signup process. Input your info and once you are asked to input your zip code it’s important that you use a 5-digit zip code. Use something like 90210.
So there you have it – you can now stream away as you please.
Since Unlocator is a DNS service and not a piece of software you can more or less use it with any device. The simplest way is to set up your home router to use the service, as this will allow all devices in the household to use Netflix. The setup guides are actually very simple and can be found here. Basically you just have to change two numbers in the network settings of your device or router. Don’t worry if you are not a computer geek – it’s very simple to do.
More devices are added to the service all the time but at the time of this writing you can watch Netflix in Germany with Unlocator on the following devices: Browser, Apple TV, iPad, iPod, iPhone, Android, Smart TVs, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Roku, Western Digital media players, Wii, Wii U and much more. You can check out the compatibility here.
Honestly no one knows, but actually it does not matter, as the American version of Netflix will always have the most content. If you take a look at all the other regions that have Netflix at the moment, none of them have the same amount of content that US Netflix has. Should Netflix some day decide to come to Germany then you can still use Unlocator to switch between German and American Netflix. Best of both worlds really.
Actually you get access to more content by using Unlocator to watch Netflix than a normal Netflix viewer in the US. This is because with Unlocator you can switch between regions as you please. If you one day would like to watch some Brazilian TV show, then simply switch to the Brazilian region from your Unlocator account and then you will start seeing content from the Brazilian version of Netflix.
Lastly – Unlocator will also unblock lots of other services so you can use it for more than just unblocking Netflix in Germany.
