How to Unblock Netflix Outside the US on the iPad

So you have bought yourself an iPad and you want to stream movies from Netflix – there is just one problem: You don’t live in the US and therefore Netflix is blocked in your country. Fear not – VPN is the solution you have been looking for.

A quick side note – in order to get the Netflix app on your iPad your iTunes account need to be connected to the US iTunes store. In order to do that without an US credit card you can buy US iTunes giftcards on ebay and redeem them. Once you do that your iTunes account will have access to the US store and you can now download and install the Netflix App.

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. What it does is connect you with a server (in this case in the US) and thus fooling Netflix into thinking you are accessing their service from within the country. A VPN connection is not free, but it is a small investment that is very handy and can be used for lots of other scenarios apart from streaming Netflix. I ended up saving 60% with the 12-month subscription from Hide My Ass. Their service is very reliable and best of all it is fast.

Setting up the connection is pretty easy. Go to Settings > General > Network > VPN and put in your account info from Hide My Ass and off you go. Below is a screenshot showing how to input the info found in the account panel at Hide My Ass. To find this info log into your account and then look for PPTP on the left hand side.

Of course you need to have an account with Netflix already for this to work, but that is just a matter of signing up while connected to VPN on your computer. Also remember to use a 5 digit zipcode when signing up – any will do.

Don’t forget that a VPN account from Hide My Ass will also give you access to numerous other cool streaming services.

    Unless you use services that will only allow you to log in from one IP-address there should not be a problem. Most services will use cookies to save user info.

    So as long as I sign up for VPN first, I can stream Netflix in Costa Rica? Should I do this before I leave for CR or once I’m there?

    So if I already have a Netflix account at home but I’m already out of the country with my IPad2, can I set this up from my IPad2 while out of the country? And will it have to be switched back once I return to the US? Also will it affect anything else on my IPad2, like internet surfing etc.?

      That is correct. You can turn on and off the VPN connection with a small slider under settings. When you need to watch Netflix while abroad simple turn it on. While it is turned on all Internet traffic will go trough the VPN.

    If I setup a US iTunes account and then use my iPad to download the Netflix app, what happens to all my other apps? From what I understand an iPad can only be synced with one account at a time, therefore when synced with the new account it will wipe out all my existing apps???

      You don’t have to setup a new account. Simply change the country of your account by using a US iTunes giftcard. That way you keep all your purchases, apps and downloads. All you are changing is the country of your account.

    i am in the uk and we already have the app available.. do i need to download the us version or are they both the same… in that case i just need to hide my vpn?

      The app is the same so all you need is to use VPN to get the US version of Netflix

      Hi there – I think you need to read the article once more. Log into the account panel of Hide My Ass and look for the PPTP info. Everything is there…server, username and password.

      Hi there – yes you can. Instead of selecting a server in the US to connect to simply select a server in Panama or Brazil (both available with Hide My Ass). Netflix looks at Latin America as one region so if you connect to either country you will get the Latin American selection.
