How to use HBO GO Outside the US

The HBO GO app is an amazing app and with over 1 million downloads it has been a sure hit. The only problem is, that as soon as you go abroad you can no longer stream. That is unless you use this trick.

You Need to Be a Subscriber

Once you try to use the app outside of the US you will be meet with the message “An internet connection is needed to access the hbo go app please try again”. The weird thing is that you are already online and connected.

The reason for this is a bad choice of words from HBO. Instead it should have read something like “The HBO Go app is not available outside the US”.

Before I go any further I have to disappoint you if you are not already a HBO subscriber, as you need to be in order to use the app at all. The trick I am about to reveal is for people who are HBO subscribers via their cable or television provider only.

Unblock the HBO GO App Outside the US

So this trick will work with the iPad, iPhone or Android version of the app. See the reason that you can’t even log into the app is that you are outside the US and the HBO servers know this by looking at your IP address. In order to get around that we will use a VPN connection to get a US based IP. Don’t worry if you are not tech savvy. This is really easy.

See all you have to do is get a VPN connection from a good provider with plenty of bandwidth. I ended up saving 60% with the 12-month subscription from Hide My Ass VPN and they have given me the best streaming quality by far. Don’t forget that with this method you can also unblock Netflix, Hulu and all the other US only services too.

Once you have signed up you will receive your login instructions and details on how to set up the connection on your mobile device or computer. As mentioned before it is super easy and Hide My Ass has 24/7 live service if you need a hand.

On the iPad and iPhone just go to Settings > General > Network and choose VPN. Then input the server info, username and password and connect and you are ready to go. On a Mac or PC you can just download the small app from Hide My Ass and then choose what server to connect to and click connect – even simpler.

    How do you compare StrongVPN with Hotspot Shield? Before Hotspot, I was unable to open the app. After installing it, I was successful in opening HBOGO, but unsuccessful in signing in to my account. For some reason, it still detects I’m out of the country. Am I missing a step here?

      I never use Hotspot Shield as it simple does not work for unblocking services. Their servers always get blocked.

    Any tips/ideas on how to get HBO GO if you’re not living in the US, but would be perfectly willing to pay the cable fee for HBO just to get access to all the fun stuff?

      At the moment all I can think about is to team up with someone you know in the US and pay for their HBO.
